In 1917 New York City, a lifetime achievement award is presented to a tortured, once-brilliant inventor named Nikola Tesla - the creator of A/C power generation and the visionary who nearly built a giant tower to send electricity across the ocean.

When he fails to show at the podium, we see he is instead descending down a stairway into the darkness of his own mind.
